About the Class

Do you wish you knew more about puppetry? Been wanting to dip your toes into puppet making? This is the class for you!

Each class will kick off with a short performance video for inspiration, and then jump into hands-on activities in puppet making and manipulation — all designed around the limited supplies available at home. In four sessions, we'll explore a range of puppetry styles and world traditions, including shadow puppetry, object puppetry, moving-mouth puppets, and even marionettes.

Before each class, a list of videos will be provided so students can prepare for that day’s topic — but don’t worry, it won’t feel like homework!

Students will leave the class with a new understanding of some of the key styles of puppetry from around the world, plus some new puppetry skills.

Recommended for adults and teens ages 13+

About the Instructor

Puppeteer, puppet builder, and arts educator Brad Shur is the founder and lead artist of Paper Heart Puppets. Brad began performing as a student at the Rhode Island School of Design. While earning a degree in film, he was a regular performer at late-night puppet slams with Big Nazo Puppets. From there, Brad went on to tour nationally with Wood and String Puppet Theatre and Vermont Puppetree. As a freelance puppet builder, he created puppets for American Idol, Dolly Parton’s Dollywood amusement park, and many theater companies.

In 2009, he became the Resident Artist at Puppet Showplace Theater where he served as the lead teaching artist and touring puppeteer for eight years. During that time, Brad developed six original shows and revived several classic shows created by Paul Vincent Davis. In 2017, Brad left Puppet Showplace for Poughkeepsie, NY and founded Paper Heart Puppets, dedicated to sharing and expanding the art of puppetry. He now tours nationally.
